DeWalt does not sell one “20V MAX battery.” The 20V MAX family alone covers at least six standard capacities plus three more in the XR line, and FlexVolt adds another three or four — enough options that grabbing whatever comes in a kit usually means leaving either runtime or weight on the table.
Why the lineup is this wide
DeWalt’s 20V MAX platform page says the system includes “300+ 20V products and growing.” A single battery cannot be ideal for a compact drill, a reciprocating saw, and a jobsite light at the same time. The result is a capacity ladder: smaller packs keep tools light and nimble, larger packs trade weight for runtime on high-draw tools.
The full capacity lineup
DeWalt’s own Batteries landing page lists standard 20V MAX batteries at 4Ah, 5Ah, 6Ah, 8Ah, and 10Ah. On the same page, the 20V MAX XR line adds 3.5Ah, a 5Ah oil-resistant variant, and 8Ah. For the 20V/60V MAX FlexVolt family, DeWalt lists 6Ah, 9Ah, and 12Ah, plus oil-resistant 9Ah and 12Ah variants. Separately, DeWalt’s 60V MAX System page says 20V/60V MAX FLEXVOLT batteries are “available in 6AH, 9AH, 12AH and 15AH” — the 15Ah top-end capacity appears there but not on the main batteries landing page.
12V MAX is a separate family, listed at 3Ah. It does not slot into the 20V MAX ladder and is not interchangeable with it.

What “compatible with 20V MAX tools” actually means
The clearest cross-tool compatibility statement found across DeWalt’s pages is on the 20V MAX XR POWERSTACK Compact Battery Kit (DCBP034C), which DeWalt states is “compatible with 20V MAX tools.” That is a platform-level statement, not a promise that every capacity will fit or perform equally in every 20V MAX tool. No DeWalt page reviewed for this guide goes further and claims any 20V MAX battery works universally in any 20V MAX tool, so this guide does not either.
The same POWERSTACK page claims “50% more power,” but qualifies it precisely as “vs. DEWALT DCB203 battery, not in application” — a lab comparison against one specific battery, not a blanket jobsite promise. The kit includes one DCBP034 20V MAX XR Compact Battery and one DCB1102 Charger.
DeWalt also repeats its standard voltage disclosure: maximum initial battery voltage measured without a workload is 20 volts, while nominal voltage is 18.
A genuinely different accessory: the DCB1800B power station
Most DeWalt battery accessories are chargers. The DCB1800B 1800W Portable Power Station and Simultaneous Battery Charger is not. It runs on four DEWALT 20V MAX batteries at once, including FlexVolt, and turns a set of packs into a portable power source. DeWalt recommends four 20V MAX 3.0Ah DCB200 batteries or higher-Ah packs for best results. It is sold tool only — no battery or charger included — so it only makes sense if you already own or plan to own the batteries.
Which capacity to actually buy
For drills, impact drivers, and other lighter tools where you hold the tool all day, stick with smaller capacities — the 3.5–5Ah range, including the lighter POWERSTACK line. For high-draw tools like circular saws, grinders, and rotary hammers, the 8–12Ah packs and FlexVolt options make more sense because runtime matters more than the extra weight. If you own or are buying a 60V-class tool, FlexVolt is required; a standard 20V MAX battery will not power it. The DCB1800B power station is a different purchase entirely — less “which battery” and more “how do I keep working during a power outage or on a site with no outlet” — since it uses four existing 20V MAX batteries as a single power source.
