Milwaukee M18 Battery & Charger Accessories: The Full Capacity Lineup Explained

Milwaukee runs three M18 battery tiers from 2.0Ah to 12.0Ah. Here is the full lineup and the Dual Bay Simultaneous Rapid Charger, sourced only from Milwaukee's own product pages.

Short answer: Milwaukee states that all M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers. The M18 REDLITHIUM lineup is organized into three tiers: standard REDLITHIUM in CP and XC form factors, REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT, and REDLITHIUM FORGE. Capacities range from 2.0Ah compact packs up to 12.0Ah HIGH OUTPUT packs, with the FORGE XC8.0 matching the HIGH OUTPUT HD12.0’s power in a package Milwaukee describes as 20% smaller and 30% lighter.

Why Milwaukee sells so many M18 battery tiers

The three tiers exist because different tools and jobs call for different trade-offs between runtime, size, weight, and output. Standard REDLITHIUM CP and XC packs cover the everyday range. Milwaukee states the REDLITHIUM XC5.0 delivers 5.0 amp-hours and “powers more than 60 Milwaukee M18 cordless power tools,” while separately stating elsewhere on its own site that the M18 system spans “300+ tools.” These two figures come from different Milwaukee pages and are not reconciled by Milwaukee itself, so we list both as-is. Milwaukee also states the XC5.0 delivers “up to 2.5X more runtime, 20% more power and 2X more recharges than standard lithium-ion batteries” — a comparison to generic lithium-ion batteries in general, not a comparison between Milwaukee’s own battery tiers.

The full capacity lineup, by tier

Tier Capacities
Standard REDLITHIUM (CP/XC) CP2.0, CP3.0, XC3.0, XC4.0, XC5.0 (5Ah)
REDLITHIUM HIGH OUTPUT XC8.0, HD12.0
REDLITHIUM FORGE XC6.0, XC8.0 (8Ah)

What “compatible with M18 tools & chargers” actually covers

Milwaukee states, “All M18 Batteries are compatible with M18 tools & chargers.” That cross-tier fit is the main reason the capacity range matters more than the platform itself. Milwaukee also states the REDLITHIUM FORGE XC8.0 is “fully compatible with the M18 system, featuring 250+ tools.” At the same time, the XC5.0 page says it “powers more than 60 Milwaukee M18 cordless power tools,” while Milwaukee’s broader M18 pages cite “300+ tools.” Since these numbers come from different Milwaukee pages and are not reconciled by Milwaukee itself, we present both rather than picking one.

A charger built for two batteries at once: the Dual Bay Simultaneous Rapid Charger

For users running multiple M18 batteries, Milwaukee offers the M18 Dual Bay Simultaneous Rapid Charger, model 48-59-1802. Milwaukee states it “accepts all M18 batteries” and is “capable of charging up to 2 battery packs at the same time at a Rapid Charge speed,” charging “2 packs simultaneously, over 3X faster than standard sequential chargers.” The charger uses “REDLINK Intelligence,” which Milwaukee describes as optimizing “charge rates based on the battery type and temperature to minimize charge duration and maximize battery lifespan.”

What this guide does not claim

This guide does not estimate runtime per tool because Milwaukee does not publish those figures, and we do not invent them. The XC5.0’s “2.5X more runtime” claim compares it to generic lithium-ion batteries, not to Milwaukee’s own HIGH OUTPUT or FORGE tiers. This article also stays strictly within the M18 capacity lineup and the Dual Bay charger; M12 vs M18 compatibility is covered in a separate guide on this site.
