Short answer: No. DeWalt and Kobalt batteries are not officially interchangeable. DeWalt’s 20V MAX and FlexVolt packs belong to the DeWalt platform; Kobalt’s 24V Max packs belong to Kobalt’s platform. The voltage labels are different, but voltage alone is not the deciding test: the battery rail, contacts, protection electronics, charger and tool-side interface also have to match. Use a battery made for the brand and platform printed on your tool.
Why DeWalt and Kobalt batteries do not cross over
The two brands define compatibility inside their own ecosystems. DeWalt states that FLEXVOLT batteries work with DeWalt 20V MAX power tools and that the same FLEXVOLT family powers DeWalt 60V MAX tools by switching voltage automatically. Kobalt’s 24V Max battery listing says its 2.0Ah and 4.0Ah packs are compatible with Kobalt 24V Max cordless power tools. Those are platform-specific claims, not a shared DeWalt–Kobalt standard.
That distinction matters because a battery is more than a source of nominal voltage. A pack must physically latch to the tool, present the expected contacts, communicate its state where required, and allow the tool’s protection circuitry to manage current and temperature. A DeWalt 20V MAX label and a Kobalt 24V Max label therefore cannot be treated as interchangeable simply because both are lithium-ion systems. Neither manufacturer’s reviewed platform documentation claims that the other brand’s pack is supported.
DeWalt 20V MAX and FlexVolt: what is compatible?
DeWalt’s important exception is within its own battery family. DeWalt says a FLEXVOLT pack is compatible with DeWalt 20V MAX tools, and its product information describes the DCB606 6Ah battery as compatible with DeWalt 20V MAX and 60V MAX tools. The FlexVolt pack automatically switches to the voltage required by the DeWalt tool. This does not create a bridge to Kobalt: a DeWalt FlexVolt battery is still a DeWalt battery, with a DeWalt interface and DeWalt tool compatibility scope.
Kobalt 24V Max: what is compatible?
Kobalt’s reviewed 24V Max starter kit includes 2.0Ah and 4.0Ah Kobalt batteries and a standard charger, and Lowe’s lists both batteries as compatible with all Kobalt 24V Max cordless power tools. Kobalt also lists a KRC 2404-03 four-port charger for Kobalt 24V Max lithium-ion batteries. These are useful choices inside Kobalt’s system, but they do not make a Kobalt pack suitable for a DeWalt tool. Kobalt’s own team answer is explicit that Kobalt 24V tools are compatible with Kobalt 24V batteries.
Does the 20V vs 24V label make a difference?
It is a warning sign, not a complete compatibility specification. Manufacturers use nominal-voltage labels differently, and the label does not describe the connector or control logic. DeWalt 20V MAX, Kobalt 24V Max, Craftsman V20 and Ryobi 18V ONE+ are separate branded platforms even when their battery packs look broadly similar in a product photo. Match the exact platform name and consult the tool manual rather than comparing only the printed number.
What about an adapter?
Third-party adapters may change the mechanical connection, but they are not an official DeWalt–Kobalt compatibility solution. An adapter can leave questions about low-voltage cutoff, temperature sensing, current limits, charging and warranty coverage. Never put a cross-brand battery on a charger unless the charger maker explicitly identifies that exact battery family as supported. If you are considering an adapter for a tool, treat it as a separate modification decision and follow the adapter maker’s safety instructions.
Which battery should you buy?
If you own DeWalt tools, buy a DeWalt 20V MAX pack or, where appropriate, a DeWalt FLEXVOLT pack identified for the tool. If you own Kobalt 24V Max tools, choose a Kobalt 24V Max pack and the corresponding Kobalt charger. If you own both brands, plan on two separate battery pools. That costs more than standardizing on one platform, but it follows the compatibility claims documented by both manufacturers and avoids forcing a pack into a tool it was not designed to serve.
