If you’re shopping for a current Makita 18V LXT battery, the first thing to check isn’t the amp-hour rating—it’s whether your tool can actually take it. Makita’s own pages for the BL1820B, BL1850B, and BL1860B all carry the same restriction: “Compatible only with Star Protection tools, indicated by the Star Symbol and/or Yellow Battery Receiver under the tool.”

This warning is unusually specific. Among the major cordless brands reviewed on this site, Makita is the only one whose battery pages spell out a tool-marking restriction like this. DeWalt, Milwaukee, and RYOBI don’t list a comparable warning on their equivalent battery pages. That creates a real buying trap: someone with an older LXT drill or saw could see “18V LXT,” grab a new BL1850B or BL1860B, and only later learn that Makita’s own compatibility statement applies only to Star Protection tools.
Makita doesn’t say what percentage of LXT tools carry Star Protection versus those that don’t. The company only points to the Star Symbol or a yellow battery receiver on the tool itself. So guessing by age, color, or model line isn’t reliable—the marking is the only check that matters.
Once compatibility is confirmed, capacity becomes the practical question. The 2.0Ah BL1820B is the compact option. Makita says it “provides up to 50% more run time per charge compared to BL1815” and “Charges in 25 minutes or less.” That makes it a natural fit for light-duty or compact tools where you want less weight on the handle.
The 5.0Ah BL1850B adds run time for heavier daily use, with Makita listing a charge time of “45 minutes or less.” For the most demanding tools, the 6.0Ah BL1860B “provides up to 2X more run time per charge compared to BL1830” and “Charges in 55 minutes or less.” It also uses “Sixteen contact terminals [that] maintain a constant connection with the tool,” and runs “Star Protection Computer Controls to protect against overloading, over-discharging and over-heating.”
If you own more than one battery, the 18V Lithium-Ion Dual Port Rapid Optimum Charger (DC18RD) is worth considering. It charges two batteries at the same time with capacity-specific timing: 2.0Ah in 25 minutes, 3.0Ah in 30 minutes, 4.0Ah in 40 minutes, 5.0Ah in 45 minutes, and 6.0Ah in 55 minutes. Makita says “The Makita Rapid Optimum Charger communicates with the battery’s built-in chip throughout the charging process to optimize battery life by actively controlling current, voltage and temperature,” and the charger uses built-in fans to cool the packs during charging. The DC18RD page doesn’t use the term “Star Protection,” though, so don’t assume that chip communication and Star Protection Computer Controls are the same thing—Makita doesn’t explicitly state that connection.
The scale of the LXT system is part of why this matters. Makita calls it “the world’s largest compatible 18V slide-style battery system with over 350 solutions.” But within that huge ecosystem, current battery production is gated by the Star Protection restriction. That’s not a buried footnote; it’s right on the battery pages. It’s just easy to overlook when you’re comparing amp-hours and prices.
Practical takeaway: before buying any current Makita LXT battery, physically check your tool for the Star Symbol or a yellow battery receiver underneath it. If the tool doesn’t have that marking, Makita’s own pages state the battery is compatible “only with Star Protection tools” — so an older, non-marked LXT tool is a real risk area, not a hypothetical one. For capacity, a 2.0Ah pack makes sense on light/compact tools where weight matters, while 5.0–6.0Ah packs are the better fit for heavier sustained use. If you own two or more batteries, the Dual Port Rapid Optimum Charger genuinely charges both at once with capacity-aware timing, not a flat one-size time.
