Makita LXT vs XGT: Are the Batteries Compatible?

LXT (18V) and XGT (40V max) are separate Makita battery platforms with no tool-level cross-compatibility. Makita's ADP10 adapter bridges the chargers only. Sourced only from Makita's US pages.

Short answer: LXT is Makita’s 18V (36V with two batteries) system; XGT is a separate 40V max (80V max with two batteries) system for higher-demand tools and equipment. The batteries are not interchangeable in tools — an LXT battery won’t power an XGT tool and an XGT battery won’t power an LXT tool. Makita does sell an official adapter (ADP10) that lets an XGT charger also charge LXT batteries, but that’s a charging convenience only, not a way to run one platform’s tools on the other’s battery.

Makita runs two cordless battery platforms in parallel rather than one universal system, and the naming — LXT, XGT — doesn’t make the difference obvious at a glance. This guide sticks to what Makita’s own US pages state.

What’s the actual voltage difference?

LXT is an 18V system, with 36V available in supported tools by using two LXT batteries at once (Makita’s “X2” designation). XGT is a separate 40V max system, with 80V max available the same way, using two XGT batteries. Because the base battery voltage is different, an LXT battery physically cannot deliver what an XGT tool needs, and vice versa.

How big is each platform?

Makita describes LXT as “the world’s largest compatible 18V slide-style battery system with over 350 solutions.” XGT is newer and smaller but growing fast: Makita states the XGT System will offer “170+ products” in one system in 2026. If your work is mostly standard-duty tools, LXT currently has the far larger tool selection; XGT is aimed at higher-output equipment (bigger saws, rotary hammers, outdoor power equipment) where the extra voltage headroom matters.

Is there any official way to bridge the two?

Yes, but only for charging. Makita sells the ADP10 adapter specifically so a 40V max XGT charger (the DC40RA model) can also charge 18V LXT batteries — useful if you’re standardizing on one charger for a mixed LXT/XGT kit. With the ADP10, an 18V LXT 6.0Ah battery charges in 40 minutes and a 2.0Ah battery in 24 minutes.

Editorial note: it’s easy to see “official Makita adapter” and assume it unlocks cross-platform tool use. It doesn’t. The ADP10 only lets one charger serve both battery families — it does not let an LXT battery run an XGT tool, or an XGT battery run an LXT tool. Tool-level compatibility is still strictly separated by platform.

So which platform should you buy into?

Editorial conclusion, not an official Makita recommendation: if you’re building a general-purpose kit — drills, drivers, saws, common trade tools — LXT’s much larger current lineup makes it the more practical starting platform. If your work regularly needs XGT’s higher-output tools (large rotary hammers, bigger saws, outdoor equipment), you’ll end up on XGT for those specific tools regardless, and the ADP10 adapter at least means you don’t need two completely separate charger stations.
