DeWalt 18V vs 20V MAX: Are Old and New Batteries Compatible?

Is “20V” actually a bigger battery than “18V”?

So why isn’t an old 18V battery just compatible with a current 20V MAX tool?

Because the two generations use a different physical battery-to-tool connector. DeWalt’s own DCA1820 adapter exists specifically to let a current 20V MAX battery slide into “most 18V DEWALT tools” — DeWalt’s own wording, which also implies it doesn’t cover every legacy tool ever made. In practical terms: the DCA1820 lets you keep using an older 18V tool with a current 20V MAX XR battery, extending the useful life of legacy tools without needing an original 18V battery (which may no longer hold a charge or be easy to find new). It does not go the other direction — it’s not a way to run a current 20V MAX tool on an old 18V battery.

Is “20V MAX XR” a different battery than plain “20V MAX”?

No — XR is a feature tier within the current 20V MAX family (generally better cells and electronics), not a separate voltage or connector. As established in the DeWalt 20V MAX/FlexVolt guide on this site, every battery labeled 20V MAX — standard, XR, or FlexVolt — uses the same current-generation connector and works across current 20V MAX tools.

What about DeWalt 12V — is that related to 20V at all?

No. DeWalt 12V is a separate, smaller platform built for compact tools, with its own battery line entirely distinct from both legacy 18V and current 20V MAX.
